Питательные вещества могут напрямую модифицировать процесс обновления костной ткани или делать это косвенно, через изменение уровней кальциотропных гормонов. Исследования связей между питанием и фенотипическими скелетными проявлениями могут привести к противоречивым результатам, частично из-за низкой точности и воспроизводимости различных методов оценки поступления питательных веществ. Кальций и белок в пищевых продуктах выступают в роли пищевых компонентов, влияющих на рост костей и возрастную потерю костной массы.
