Low bone mass and a deterioration microarchitecture are characteristic features of osteoporosis that can lead to fractures, related pain, physical disability, poor quality of life, increased mortality, and high costs of medical care. Teriparatide (recombinant human parathyroid hormone [rhPTH (1-34), Forsteo], which appeared more than a decade ago, is the only one registered in the Russian Federation anabolic treatment for osteoporosis, which increases the density and strength of bone. Initially, it was approved for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis based on the data from a randomized, controlled phase III study that showed a significant reduction in the incidence of vertebral and nonvertebral fractures. Teriparatide is now also approved for the treatment of osteoporosis at high risk of fractures in men and glucocorticoid osteoporosis.
